Origins of the Surname Quattlebaum
I was born with the last name Quattlebaum. I know through research done by a Paul Quattlebaum that I was descended from a couple who immigrated to America back in the late 1600's named Petter and Anna. They in turn had three sons, and I am further descended from one of those brothers. I have always thought the name to be fascinating, and quite frankly the reason I am a good speller is because I had to tackle this surname in kindergarten, which was no easy task. There is debate about where this name comes from and what it means. The word "baum" in German means "tree", so there is speculation that perhaps a "quattle" is perhaps a type of tree or fruit. I did come across a passage online that indicated it means "barrier at the end of the road." This is inconsistent with the family lore that it is some kind of a fruit tree. A linguist explained that it is a derivative of old and middle German (similar to old English). "Baum" actually means barrier in in that language rather than tree. I have met several Germans in my lifetime, and every opportunity I get, I ask them if they have ever heard of the name. No one ever has, which leads me to believe it is a form of Old German language. Perhaps I will never find out the meaning of this name, but I will say that I am proud of it. |

My mother's maiden name is quattlebaum. Emma Rue Quattlebaum. Her father was Samuel Oscar Quattlebaum. I found this for the meaning of Quattlebaum. Quattlebaum
